A 31 year old American woman, Janae Helgerson has been charged with wire fraud and making false statements after setting up a bogus egg donation service called Mid-West Egg Donation.
Prosecutors say that the woman did not pay the donors, but simply disappeared, once the donor eggs had been removed in a proper clinic.
One woman has come forward to say that she is owed $7,500
How To Avoid Egg Donation Scam
Would-be egg donors in the US have been advised to check that any clinic is registered with either their state or American Medical Associations.
Also check that the American Society of Reproductive Medicine endorses the clinic. The Society also advises that the money being offered can also be an indicator. The Society recommends payments up $5,000 a time, and that payments over $10,000 are inappropriate. But this depends upon the fee agreed between the donor and the clinic or agency.
As always it is best to go with reputation and those clinics with a proven record.
